Book Review: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Title: Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky #1)
Author: Veronica Rossi
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publishing Date: January 3rd 2012
Length: 374 pages
Keywords: YA, fiction, fantasy, dystopian, romance, tribes
Source: Book Fair

WORLDS KEPT THEM APART.
DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.

Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.

Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.

If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers.

Summary by Goodreads

When I picked up UNDER THE NEVER SKY and was a few pages into the story I thought I'd never get accustomed to this strange new world Veronica Rossi created. People living in domes, prevented from going to the outside and 'living' their lives in realms, virtual worlds to entertain their minds, never experiencing life in its full expanse. On the outside there are Savages who live in tribes without any culture or morals as Aria has always been taught.

Aria's story is set long after humanity as we've known it was destoryed. The world collapsed in on itself and so called Aether storms have taken over most of the land, leaving fiery destruction in their wake. Fights for territories with other tribes as the struggle to gain power within your own are inevitable.
The clash of advanced technology and tribal, very basic formations of life was a subject I often had to renegotionate throughout the story because the gap between them was so enormous.
A rather minor thing that irritated me were the remainders of ancient culture that popped up at some points during the story. Old pieces of art or inventions are mentioned by Aria and I kept wondering about how she or anyone else would have had the time to remember or cherish them when entire cities were being destroyed. Who cared for such things when people fought for survival? It's very trivial but they somehow weakened the authentic feel about the world building I slowly and steadily warmed up to.

The dual point of view from which the story was told, Aria the Dweller and Perry the Savage, came unexpected and it took me some time to get used to Perry's side of the story for I feared I wouldn't be able to pay much interest to his tribal life. I was surprised myself that it didn't took very long for me to get completely sucked into the story and I wouldn't have wanted to miss one of their perspectives on the events.
I'm always for love stories between very extreme characters who represent total opposites and different worlds, so you can guess Aria and Perry's love story was what made UNDER THE NEVER SKY an even more fabulous read. They fight, they curse and hurt each other, therefore the making up in the end is even that much more pleasurable.

UNDER THE NEVER SKY felt so much like a miniature version of Game of Thrones. With only one story to follow instead of numerous different ones but no less compelling in its intensity.

4,5/ 5 ****/* UNDER THE NEVER SKY - A miraculous and dangerous new fantastical world to get lost in!

Just make sure to be found by Perry, he's the best guide! It's been a long time since I've discovered a dystopian world as unique as Veronica's world under the never sky. Aria, Perry and their friends (Roar is one of my favourites, too) will be staying with me for a long time and I could barely contain my excitement to press the order button for THROUGH THE EVER NIGHT.

“She absorbed the terror and beauty of him and his world. Of every moment over the past days. All of it, filling her up like the first breath she'd ever taken. And never had she loved life more.” ― p. 252

UNDER THE NEVER SKY you should also enjoy GRACELING by Kristin Cashore, THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS by Rae Carson and TOUCH OF POWER by Maria V. Snyder (my favourite out of the three). All of them are offering you another fantastical world and a strong woman with a quest.

Back from blogging break

I'm finally back from my blogging break! And I have to admit it was kinda hard to sit down and write a full blog post after weeks of reading only and (sadly) neglecting the blog.
I've been home for a week now and spent the two weeks before in Denmark. Vacation was as relaxing and awesome as always. It was Amy's first vacation and after the first few hours of irritation about the new house she just loved it and claimed the beach as her new favourite place on earth.

Her days were spent walking the humans. She played a lot with older dogs and was gloating that she was the fastest dog there. Her afternoons were mostly spent digging holes the size of a car, or nibbling sticks. And especially after stalking these poor anglers she was so tired she fell asleep on the couch.

Again we stayed in one of the cute little cottages located on the west coast of Denmark, only a few feet separating you from the wide sandy beach.
The weather wasn't the best, wind and rain dominating our two weeks there.
We still went to the beach every time we could and went on walks but I was more than happy to concentrate on reading. I read 7 1/2 books and approximately 2800 pages (and reduced the books I'm behind on my Goodreads challenge to only five!) which is a decent number for me.

I started the first book about ten minutes after we'd left town and mananged to squeeze in a little reading time during the car ride and in between uncomfortable naps. After finishing the fourth VAMPIRE ACADEMY book the night of our departure I couldn't wait to pick up the fifth book. And so the first book I read in Denmark was SPIRIT BOUND by Richelle Mead.

The VAMPIRE ACADEMY story got better and better with each new book added to the series. After a quick visit to Crystal Cove and the love story of Anna and Tyler in MOONGLASS by Jessi Kirby, I devoured the nearly 600 pages of  LAST SACRIFICE in only a few days.

My holiday reads were made up of a mixture between dark, thrilling books and sweet YA contemporaries. DANGEROUS GIRLS, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US and TEN were not exactly highlight reads but pretty decent and enjoyable.

Then I started my first Sarah Dessen book. About time! I really liked it and am looking forward to read many more of her books in future. When it was time to leave again I had only managed to get halfway through SUCH A RUSH (I had a few issues with this book but enjoyed it nevertheless).

Here are a couple more pictures of the vacation and Amy and me chilling with the holiday reads on the beach (yep, I totally brought tiny beach towls for them, just for the pic of course LOL).

So I'm back with renewed energy and am set on spending much more time on blogging and commenting.
My goal is to write reviews immediately after finishing a book and putting it aside. I'm applying a new slightly different review scheme and am working on a new book quiz.

That blogoversary thing...

You can also expect a giveaway very soon since I had my three year blogoversary while I was on vacation. Can you believe it? 3 entire years of blogging and sometimes I still feel like I'm new to the business when reviews sound clumsy even after the fifth revision. But then I'm amazed that I get emails by fellow readers and bloggers asking for my advice! It feels insane and incredibly great at the same time and I'm so thankful for every small conversation on Twitter, book talk on Goodreads or comment on my blog (picture teary eyes here). They (and you) enrich my life. To many more years of friendship and book talk!!

Random Stuff

* After the vacation I had a manic cleaning day and felt like re-organising my bookshelves. I hate that my series were left separated that way but I do love the pretty color sorting scheme.

* I watched a ton of movies. The Great Gatsby - never read the book but liked the movie even though it wasn't Leo's strongest performance. Argo - tough political conflict, outstanding Affleck. Wreck-It Ralph - possibly the wrost Disney movie ever.

* And I started Breaking Bad. Never thought it'd be a series for me. Didn't know it would be that hilarious. Starting season 3 now.

 * I freaked out about the Divergent movie trailer. Who didn't?!

* Two days ago I read a book that I now consider my favourite of 2013 (beside PIVOT POINT by Kasie West). THESE BROKEN STARS by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner was the best book I have read in quite a long time actually. The love story is...OH MY GOD, you'll LOVE it!! It doesn't come out until December 2013 but you should make sure to pre-order it as soon as possible!

Tell me how you spent your summer and what awesome holiday reads you found!

Book Review: Adorkable by Sarra Manning

Title: Adorkable
Author: Sarra Manning
Publisher: Atom
Publishing Date: May 24th 2012
Length: 387 pages
Keywords: YA, fiction, romance, sex, blogging, fashion
Source: Publisher

Welcome to the dorkside. It's going to be a bumpy ride...

Jeane Smith's a blogger, a dreamer, a dare-to-dreamer, a jumble sale queen, CEO of her own lifestyle brand and has half a million followers on twitter.

Michael Lee's a star of school, stage and playing field. A golden boy in a Jack Wills hoodie.

They have nothing in common but a pair of cheating exes. So why can't they stop snogging?

Summary by Goodreads

I wish Jeane Smith were real so I could be friends with her. Don't you? She's a very unique and alternative character. She doesn't care what other people think about her, has always a big mouth and a ton of hip things to surround herself with. And she's a character I guess not everyone can easily identify with as a heroine but I really enjoyed her being different than the mass of plain always the same YA main characters. Jeane in fact is a very interesting character to follow on her metamorphosis and trip to self-discovery.

Jeane has many talents. She's a blogger and is an inspiration for her readers every day, like a guru. She seems to have it all, admirers and success. Jeane appears more like an adult than the teen she theoretically is. But there is more to this colorful and confident person that's her. She's living alone in her apartment, her family checking on her from time to time and at some point she realises something's missing in her life.

In order to provide us with a sparking romance Sarra Manning couldn't have put anyone but Michael Lee at Jeane's side. There needed to be someone who couldn't be more different than Jeane. And that would be Michael. When they first meet you immediately notice what's not lacking...tension. It starts as a kind of kissy resentment, but soon seems to be more for both of them. Now they have to start figuring out their feelings for each other, always hiding never admitting in front of others, sometimes not even to themselves what's real and pretend. They bicker, they fight and gladly make up. Jeane and Michael are polar opposites with him being the ambitious and super popular overachiever and her being bossy and so so snarky. Their love is freakishly cute and sexy.

The story being told from their alternating perspectives gives us a chance to fall in love with Michael Lee only so much more. Both are on Twitter and having conversations without knowing who they are really talking to, adding an additional entertainment factor to the story. Note that ADORKABLE discusses cheating and features sexual content.

ADORKABLE has a collection of remarkable and colorful characters to brighten your day. Many components are adding up to a dynamic and multifarious story. ADORKABLE felt just right, with pleasant page count and exactly the perfect mixture of everything to make a dream of a summer read.

1) of its colorful and delightfully quirky main character Jeane
2) of our favourite animal pic provider
3) of an adorkable manifesto
4) of never being anyone other than yourself
5) polar opposites provide the most fiery romances

5/5 ***** ADORKABLE – A bright and very prominent read with so much crazy, sexy fun!

ADORKABLE is the first novel by Sarra Manning that I read and I can't wait to read her other books. I'm sure just like ADORKABLE they are ultimately entertaining. Blogging, fashion, family, her love life. There's nothing Jeane couldn't master... or turn upside dow.

Blog Tour: Letters to Nowhere by Julie Cross Excerpt

I'm happy to welcome you to today's stop of the Letters to Nowhere blog tour by Julie Cross. You might know Julie Cross as the author of the bestselling TEMPEST series, a time travel trilogy (and one of my absolute favourites). On August 1st 2013 Julie released her mature young adult contemporary novel Letters to Nowhere which has 360 pages and is self-published. Enjoy an excerpt of Letters to Nowhere, five facts about it and enter the giveaway below.

Letters to Nowhere by Julie Cross

Her family may be shattered, but her dreams aren't... From the International Bestselling Author of the Tempest series

A Mature YA contemporary set in the tough world of Elite Gymnastics. Grief, love and pursuing dreams are at the forefront of this emotionally powerful coming-of-age story.

Seventeen year old Karen Campbell has just lost both her parents in a tragic car accident. Grief stricken and alone, her gymnastics coach opens his home to Karen, providing her a place to live while she continues to train, working toward a spot on the world championship team.

Coach Bentley’s only child, seventeen year old Jordan is good-looking and charming enough to scare away a girl like Karen—someone who has spent ten times more hours on balance beams and uneven bars than talking or even thinking about boys. But the two teens share a special connection almost immediately. It turns out Jordan has a tragic past of his own, grief buried for years.

As Karen’s gymnastics career soars, her nightmares and visions of the horrible accident grow in strength. She can only avoid facing her grief for so long before it begins to surface and ultimately spin out of control in a very dangerous way. Can discovering love and lust (simultaneously) help with the grieving process or will it only provide a temporary distraction while waiting for reality to hit full force.

5 Facts About Letters to Nowhere

1) Since I started writing the book I've envisioned my main character, Karen, as a red-headed McKayla Maroney even though I tried my best not to picture her as anyone specific.

2) I've been around the world of competitive gymnastics for at least 15 years and therefore have depicted elite level gymnastics as true-to-life as possible in this book.

3) The romance in LtN is not your typical for YA, "insta-love" or "fall in love then break up" format. This will please some and disappoint others.

4) My main character, Karen, has just lost both her parents in a tragic car accident prior to the book's opening however, I don't consider this a typical book about death either because there are so many other elements intertwined and Karen is a fighter, she's constantly driven by one goal or another. It's about rising up after a fall.

5) LtN is truly the book of my heart because I wanted, for so long, to find a way to combine by two greatest passions - YA Literature and Gymnastics.

Excerpt

Stevie and I finished our cool-down stretches quietly, listening in on the discussions around us. It was decided that Ellen, who was running a fever of a hundred and three, would be sent to bed with fluids and Tylenol. Then they spent several minutes deciding to put Ellen in her own room so she wouldn’t infect any of the others. Blair was checked out by the team doctor next and restricted to only bars and beam—no tumbling, vault, or dismounts for the entire weekend. Needless to say, none of us were in good spirits by the time we headed to our rooms.

But I was pleasantly surprised to have a text from Jordan waiting for me on my cell phone. This led to a long exchange over the next several hours between dinner, showering, bringing Ellen my fuzzy slippers, and a team meeting.

Jordan: Mrs. Garrett’s teeth are soaking in a glass on the kitchen counter . . . can you pls break your ankle or something and come home early?
Me: Omg! Ew. I’ll try to help you help out. Maybe I’ll throw a triple back on floor tomorrow
Jordan: Thanks! How’s camp so far? Do they really have llamas there?
Me: Yep. There’s a llama and a few bulls and some chickens. I think it’s gonna be a rough weekend. Ellen’s sick. Blair might have a stress fracture . . . Stevie’s under way too much pressure
Jordan: Stevie’s a pro. Don’t worry about her. She’ll come through. Besides, I thought we were feeling sorry for me right now. Not you. What do you think Mrs. Garrett wears to bed? It’s gonna be scary, isn’t it? Me: Right. I apologize for not focusing 100% on Jordan Bentley’s problems
Jordan: Apology accepted
Me: Can I ask you something?
Jordan: Sure . . .
Me: You go to Catholic school, right? You have church or mass or religion class or whatever?
Jordan: All of the above
Me: This is a stupid question, so don’t answer it if you don’t want to . . . but what do you believe? As far as afterlife goes? I know it’s stupid. You can ignore me.

My phone rang about thirty seconds after I sent the last text. I answered it with a pounding heart. I had gone too far this time. Jordan would probably tell me I needed professional help, though technically I was already getting help.

“Hey,” I said after the third ring.

“Hey,” Jordan said and just the sound of his voice put butterflies in my stomach. “It’s not a stupid question, I just didn’t want to answer it by text.”

“I’m not pondering over this twenty-four-seven or anything, it’s just . . . sometimes . . .”

“You think about it,” he finished for me.

“Yeah.”

“I don’t know, Karen.” He sighed. “I’m not sure what I believe. I want to think about my family in Heaven, but it’s so out there. So much fantasy and not enough reality. Hell seems more believable than pearly gates and angels floating around in clouds.”

“That’s my problem, too.” I slid under the covers and pulled the blanket up to my chin.

“Maybe I believe in ghosts . . . not that I have any evidence or proof, but it seems a lot more possible than Heaven or Hell.”

“Memories are like ghosts for me,” I said.

Author Bio

I live in central Illinois with my wonderful husband and three kids currently between the ages of 7 and 12 (the kids not the husband). My writing journey began in May, 2009 with a short story in a notebook.

Within a year, I had written seven (some good some God-awful) young adult novels. Not being a college graduate and having spent the previous fifteen years teaching gymnastics and working as a YMCA Program Director for Recreational Gymnastics, professional writing wasn't in my plans. Not even close. But ever since the day I started that short story, I haven't been able to stop. It was love at first sight.

After about a year of writing, I had a three book deal with St. Martin's Press, and a film option with Summit Entertainment. Crazy, right? I know. It wasn't until August of 2011 that I quit working full time in order to be at home with my kids more and of course, write more. My young adult time travel debut novel, Tempest, released on January 17, 2012. The rest of my personal story remains unwritten.
